Washington and Colorado voted to legalize and regulate its recreational use beginning in 2013.

Initiative, Amendment 64

A Colorado Marijuana Legalization Amendment, also known as Amendment 64, was on the November 6, 2012 ballot in Colorado as an initiated constitutional amendment, where it was approved.
The measure legalized marijuana in the state.  A similar measure was on the 2006 ballot in the state, where it was defeated.

But before that historic vote, hemp, renowned since ancient times for its strong fibers, medical use and mind-altering properties, was a staple crop of the  American colony farmers, an “assassin” of youth,  a counterculture emblem and a widely accepted,  if often mis-understood, organic remedy.
